CHAPTER EIGHT
It was well into the evening by the time Eve got home. Talking to Mason had been both helpful and frustrating. She was now more convinced than ever that someone here in Granite was responsible for two murders but finding them seemed harder than ever.
All she could do was find lost people. Finding stolen items was going to be a lot more complicated.
It had been a long day, and she felt like her thoughts were going in circles, so when she got home, she decided that she had done enough for today. She jotted a few notes down in her phone, then decided to think about it more tomorrow. Right now, she was both mentally and physically exhausted, had more than a few itchy bug bites, and hadnât eaten anything besides a few granola bars she had brought with her on the search earlier that day.
She didnât know if she could solve this mystery on a full stomach, let alone an empty one.
Not thinking about something was harder than it seemed like it ought to be, but she gave it her best that night. Tiana wanted an update and details, of course, but Eve got her to agree to wait until tomorrow. They decided to meet for brunch. Hopefully, two minds would be better than one, and Tiana would have some ideas after Eve laid everything out for her.
In the morning, she took the dogs on a walk around her neighborhood first thing, right after her coffee, since she wasnât sure what the day would bring, and she didnât want them to be completely bored if she ended up not coming home until the evening again. After freshening up, she left to go meet Tiana at Superior Slices, the little sandwich shop and deli right across from the dental office they worked at, for brunch.
When they met at the restaurant, Tiana chatted about how her own day had gone as they ordered their food, but Eve could tell from the looks her friend kept giving her that she was going to get the third degree as soon as they sat down. Sure enough, once they had their order numbers and had claimed a table, Tiana dove right in.
âThe last thing I heard, other than the text you sent last night to let me know you found the guy, was that a recently murdered man slipped you a note right before his death asking you to find his missing brother. Girl, I need the details. What exactly happened?â
Eve launched into her explanation, glad for the chance to talk to someone she trusted, someone she knew beyond a shadow of a doubt wasnât involved in any of this. Tiana was a good listener, nodding every so often and only interrupting if she needed something to be clarified. When she finished, her friend looked a little overwhelmedâwhich was exactly how Eve felt.
âWell, thatâs it. Thatâs why I went MIA yesterday. I didnât get a chance to thank you for my birthday celebration, so Iâll do that now.
